The new long-range Avatar: The Way of Water opening weekend projections at the box office show the sequel nearly surpassing the success of James Cameron’s first film. Avatar: The Way Of Water Review -fi thriller of 2009 broke all sorts of box office records on its path to becoming the top-grossing film ever. The phenomenal box office success of Avatar has drawn a lot of attention to the amount Avatar 2 will make. Although no one is expecting Avatar 2 to surpass the previous film’s $2.9 billion worldwide haul, the movie’s big budget and Disney’s commitment to the future of the franchise means that there’s a lot of expectation for Avatar: The Way of Water to perform.

According to new long-range tracking provided by Box Office Pro, Avatar: The Way of Water is now expected to bring in over $135 million during its opening weekend domestically. The first Avatar’s box-office debut had a $77 million opening in the US, 13 years ago, in December. So the new projections suggest Avatar 2’s opening weekend box office to be nearly twice the original. The projections recommend that the sequel bring in $475M domestically by conclusion the theatrical release, this is lower than earlier estimates and roughly half of the total amount Avatar earned domestically.

A high first weekend opening for Avatar: The Way of Water would be a great start for the sequel in the world of box-office. A reported $135 million opening could mean that the sequel will earn the same amount in just one weekend as took James Cameron’s first movie a full week to earn. However, Avatar 2’s box office will still have a tough way to beat the first. The reason Avatar had such a remarkable box office run is the film’s incredible word-of-mouth advertising and repeat screenings that helped keep the movie running in theaters for 234 consecutive days. This isn’t commonplace, even for the biggest movies. To give you an example, Top Gun: Maverick was the highest-rated film of 161 days in the year.

There is little belief of the possibility that Avatar: The Way of Water will surpass the first film, but it doesn’t have to be the top-grossing film ever in order to be a hit. The anticipation surrounding the sequel has mostly quelled the rhetoric that Avatar didn’t make a lasting impression on general audiences. Even even if the sequel’s gross is just half the size of the first movie, it would still make $1.3 billion and that would make Avatar 2’s record-breaking box office an enormous success. This is enough to be the second-highest-grossing film of 2022.

There is an element of doubt about Avatar 2’s box office to be good enough for James Cameron to continue his sequel plans alive. He is attached to create three sequels, with Avatar 3 already completely filmed. There is also some work being done to make Avatar 4. However, the director has admitted that If the sequel’s box office disappoints and indicates audiences are not at all interested, Avatar 3 could be the last movie in the franchise. In that fashion, Avatar: The Water’s box-office will play a huge influence on what’s in the future for James Cameron’s films.
