Portuguese Wine Australia
The focused palate is soft (there’s barely any tannin) and sweetly fruited, with a liquoricey edge and simply enough level of acidity to hold things in check. 49 Waitrose) 01/01 Medium red colour.
On the palate, mouthfilling flavours of ripe cherry fruit, with a fantastic soft, smooth texture and real complexity. There is some brett, too, with medical and organic notes in the background. This red wine prevents the rather bitter character I’ve often experienced in Portuguese reds. There is real concentration and class here, with all the components in harmony.
Portuguese Green Wine
Excellent, however not exceptional. 99 Oddbins) 12/99 Despite suffering on the racks of a local branch of Threshers for a few years (the current release is 1998, I think), this wine was still very much alive.
Both wines are the same colour, a thick purple black, but immediately this white wine stood apart since of a blast of sweet new American oak. On the palate there is a strong cherry component, high level of acidity, and spicy vanillin oak. Nevertheless, it would be unfair to state that it is overoaked, as the oak balances well with the spicy, bitter fruit, making a well rounded plan.

On the nose there is sweet fruit with a seconary organic quality. On Buy Port Australia there is an appealing blend of blackberries, black cherries, blackcurrant and creamy vanilla. My only criticism is that there is something missing from the midpalate– the total flavour is a little flat right in the centre of the flavour spectrum.
On the taste buds this red wine is sternly tannic: it is not fruit-driven, but instead shows notes of herbs, tea, chalk and minerals, with the effect of the Portuguese oak apparent. Extremely structured and dry, but a good food match and a steal at 4, for what is quite a serious, if stern, red wine.

99, Majestic– part of the bin-end sale, so hurry). 2/00 Luis Pato is the name everyone discusses when the Bairrada area is discussed: he’s been producing wines from 62 ha of household owned vineyards (in 23 different plots) considering that the early 1980s that have been attracting a great deal of press.
They are possibly really excellent; I state potentially, due to the fact that all these white wines will really require a years or so to actually show at their finest. They are not commonly available yet in the UK. The market price will be some 15-20 per bottle, so they are not low-cost, although this is affordable for the quality available.

5/00 Luis Pato Barrio 1998From 70 year old wines, this offers a little more on the nose. 5/00 Luis Pato Quinta do Moinho 1998Once again, a firm, tannic red wine. Deep and complex; excellent things that requires time to show its finest.
