    Portuguese Wine

Good, however not impressive. 99 Oddbins) 12/99 In spite of languishing on the racks of a regional branch of Threshers for a few years (the present release is 1998, I believe), this red wine was still extremely much alive.

Both white wines are the exact same colour, a thick purple black, however instantly this wine stood out since of a blast of sweet brand-new American oak. On the taste buds there is a strong cherry component, high level of acidity, and spicy vanillin oak. However, it would be unfair to say that it is overoaked, as the oak balances well with the spicy, bitter fruit, making a well rounded bundle.

On the nose there is sweet fruit with a seconary natural quality. On Homepage there is an appetizing mix of blackberries, black cherries, blackcurrant and velvety vanilla. Red Wine is that there is something missing from the midpalate– the total flavour is a little flat right in the centre of the flavour spectrum.

    Portuguese Wine

On the taste buds this red wine is sternly tannic: it is not fruit-driven, but rather reveals notes of herbs, tea, chalk and minerals, with the effect of the Portuguese oak apparent. Really structured and dry, but a good food match and a steal at 4, for what is quite a serious, if stern, white wine.

99, Majestic– part of the bin-end sale, so rush). 2/00 Luis Pato is the name everyone discusses when the Bairrada region is discussed: he’s been producing wines from 62 ha of household owned vineyards (in 23 different plots) considering that the early 1980s that have actually been attracting a great deal of press.

They are potentially extremely excellent; I say possibly, because all these red wines will actually require a years or two to really show at their finest. They are not extensively offered yet in the UK. The retail price will be some 15-20 per bottle, so they are not cheap, although this is reasonable for the quality on offer.

5/00 Luis Pato Barrio 1998From 70 year old red wines, this offers a little bit more on the nose. 5/00 Luis Pato Quinta do Moinho 1998Once once again, a company, tannic red wine. Deep and complex; excellent stuff that requires time to reveal its best.
