Portuguese Green Wine
The concentrated taste buds is soft (there’s barely any tannin) and sweetly fruited, with a liquoricey edge and simply sufficient acidity to hold things in check. 49 Waitrose) 01/01 Medium red colour.
On the taste buds, mouthfilling flavours of ripe cherry fruit, with a fantastic soft, smooth texture and real complexity. There is some brett, too, with medical and herbal notes in the background. This red wine avoids the rather bitter character I’ve often experienced in Portuguese reds. There is real concentration and class here, with all the elements in consistency.
Portuguese Wine Australia
Great, however not outstanding. (6. 99 Oddbins) 12/99 Despite languishing on the shelves of a local branch of Threshers for a few years (the current release is 1998, I think), this white wine was still quite alive. A reassuring deep red/purple colour with some brick red at the rim. Theres a sweet edge to the high acid, slightly volatile, spicy nose, with notes of leather and tea.
Both wines are the same colour, a dense purple black, however instantly this wine stood out because of a blast of sweet new American oak. On the taste buds there is a strong cherry part, high level of acidity, and spicy vanillin oak. Take a look at the site here would be unjust to say that it is overoaked, as the oak balances well with the spicy, bitter fruit, making a well rounded bundle.
Portuguese Green Wine
On the nose there is sweet fruit with a seconary organic quality. On the palate there is a tasty blend of blackberries, black cherries, blackcurrant and creamy vanilla. My only criticism is that there is something missing out on from the midpalate– the total flavour is a little flat right in the centre of the flavour spectrum.
On the palate this wine is sternly tannic: it is not fruit-driven, but rather reveals notes of herbs, tea, chalk and minerals, with the effect of the Portuguese oak apparent. Extremely structured and dry, but an excellent food match and a take at 4, for what is rather a severe, if stern, wine.

99, Majestic– part of the bin-end sale, so hurry). 2/00 Luis Pato is the name everyone mentions when the Bairrada region is talked about: he’s been producing wines from 62 ha of family owned vineyards (in 23 different plots) because the early 1980s that have been drawing in a lot of press.
They are potentially really excellent; I state possibly, since all these wines will actually require a years or so to truly show at their finest. They are not widely offered yet in the UK. The list price will be some 15-20 per bottle, so they are not low-cost, although this is sensible for the quality on deal.

5/00 Luis Pato Barrio 1998From 70 year old wines, this gives a little bit more on the nose. 5/00 Luis Pato Quinta do Moinho 1998Once once again, a firm, tannic white wine. Deep and complex; great stuff that requires time to show its finest.
