The focused taste buds is soft (there’s barely any tannin) and sweetly fruited, with a liquoricey edge and just adequate acidity to hold things in check. 49 Waitrose) 01/01 Medium red colour.

On the taste buds, mouthfilling flavours of ripe cherry fruit, with a fantastic soft, smooth texture and genuine intricacy. Click for more info avoids the rather bitter character I have actually frequently come across in Portuguese reds.

Great, however not exceptional. (6. 99 Oddbins) 12/99 In spite of suffering on the racks of a regional branch of Threshers for a couple of years (the current release is 1998, I think), this white wine was still quite alive. A reassuring deep red/purple colour with some brick red at the rim. Theres a sweet edge to the high acid, slightly volatile, hot nose, with notes of leather and tea.

Both red wines are the same colour, a thick purple black, however immediately this wine stood out since of a blast of sweet new American oak. On the taste buds there is a strong cherry element, high acidity, and spicy vanillin oak. It would be unfair to say that it is overoaked, as the oak balances well with the spicy, bitter fruit, making a well rounded plan.

On the nose there is sweet fruit with a seconary herbal quality. On the palate there is an appetizing mix of blackberries, black cherries, blackcurrant and creamy vanilla. My only criticism is that there is something missing out on from the midpalate– the overall flavour is a little flat right in the centre of the flavour spectrum.

On the taste buds this red wine is sternly tannic: it is not fruit-driven, but rather reveals notes of herbs, tea, chalk and minerals, with the impact of the Portuguese oak evident. Really structured and dry, however an excellent food match and a steal at 4, for what is quite a serious, if stern, wine.

99, Majestic– part of the bin-end sale, so hurry). 2/00 Luis Pato is the name everyone points out when the Bairrada area is talked about: he’s been producing white wines from 62 ha of family owned vineyards (in 23 various plots) because the early 1980s that have been drawing in a lot of press.

They are possibly really outstanding; I say potentially, because all these red wines will actually need a years or so to really show at their best. They are not commonly offered yet in the UK. The retail rate will be some 15-20 per bottle, so they are not inexpensive, although this is affordable for the quality available.

5/00 Luis Pato Barrio 1998From 70 year old white wines, this gives a bit more on the nose. 5/00 Luis Pato Quinta do Moinho 1998Once once again, a firm, tannic red wine. Deep and complex; great things that requires time to show its finest.
